Estland auf dem richtigen Weg - Malcolm Lincoln & Manpower4

Nach bereits 15 Teilnahmen und einem Sieg im Jahr 2001 ist Estland auch dieses Jahr wieder dabei. Musikalisch gesehen als Außenseiter, denn der estnische Beitrag wird wohl das Modernste sein, was man bisher beim Contest gehört hat.

Und dabei wirkt das Musikstück überhaupt nicht aufgesetzt schrill oder gewaltwitzig, sondern ragt für mich gerade wegen seiner Nonchalance hervor: Eine wenig markante Melodie, ständige Tempowechsel, ein Chor, der mehr auf Soundbereicherung setzt, untermalt mit elektronischen Klangstrukturen, das alles gibt dem Stück eine angenehm räumliche Weite.

"It’s time to make it clear what is lost and what is found,
My life has been oh lame, has been oh lame so far
I wasted years, I wasted time trying to reach the stars."

Hier hat sich mal schlicht der gute musikalische Geschmack gegen jedes Contest-Kalkül durchgesetzt. Ähnliches lässt sich von der Performance bei der Vorentscheidung sagen: Auf so etwas Einfaches muss man erst mal kommen!






"Malcolm Lincoln & Manpower4" ist ein Projekt von Robin Juhkental, von ihm ist auch das Stück "Siren". Robin ist studierter Straßenbauingenieur und macht seit ungefähr 6 Jahren Musik. Sein Contest-Stück ist nicht gerade repräsentativ für seine Musik, siehe http://www.myspace.com/malcolmlincoln

Von einer internen Jury zunächst abgelehnt, durfte er wegen der Disqualifizierung eines Teilnehmers nachrücken und gewann dann bei der Publikumsabstimmung prompt die Vorentscheidung. Damit setzt Estland dieses Jahr auf die Kreativität und den Eigensinn junger Musiker, diese sind allerdings für ihre Contest-Teilnahme und die Promotion selber verantwortlich. "Kein Problem", wie Robin signalisiert. Gute Musik wirbt für sich, und Robin profitiert bereits jetzt von seinem Erfolg. Wer Robin gerne im Finale sehen möchte, kann beim 1. Weil mich diese Musik freut und fasziniert, habe ich Malcom Lincoln ein paar Fragen geschickt, hier sind seine Antworten:

1. When I first listened to your song “Siren”, your name was Robin Juhkental, but who is Malcolm Lincoln? Is this a special Eurovision-Song-Contest-Project?

Robin: First I forgot to put a performer name to a form we had to fill, when I sent my demo to estoninan eurovision pre-selection, so they used a name of the author.
Malcolm Lincoln is a project that was active before this eurovision fuss started.

2. When I first heard your song my impression was: Wow, very britsh! What kind of music do you prefer? Are there any influences from other bands?

Robin: I listen to all kind of music: electro, jazz, rock'n' roll etc Siren was written 4 years ago, when I was under big influence of britpop.

3. Are you a professional musician? And can you live from your music?

Robin: I'm not a professional musician, but now that this eurovision thing made us quite big in estonia I can live from my music.

4. When did you start with your music career?

Robin: I bought my first guitat when I was 15, about 6 years ago.

5. Are there already releases, albums?

Robin: Malcolm Lincoln's first album is gonna be released at the end of april.

6. Your song isn’t typical for the ESC. I dare say, the song is one of the most modern songs of ESC ever. Did you want to modernize the ESC? ;-)

Robin: Estonia has changed the direction- not to pick or choose a potential eurovision winner song, but to select a song that Estonian like the most.

7. Fans of ESC are usually a little bit conservative. I will hope, that they can appreciate your modern style. So what are you doing to promote your song? Do you get any support?

Robin: I don't really care much about the place on Eurovision song contest, and I can't say I'm promoting it a lot, we'll see how it goes.

8. Have you already listen to the other songs von ESC 2010? What do you think about them? Do you have preferences?

Robin: Haven't heard other songs yet. Hopefully there are some really good tunes there in the selection.
